Sylvia's Bio: Sylvia Schwarz is a St. Paul resident and a civil engineer. She is Jewish and the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors and victims. The birth of the nation of Israel was always framed as heroic, vulnerable Zionists fighting for freedom from yet another anti-Semitic horde, and this was never questioned in her household. It was only after Israels invasion of Lebanon in 1982, that Sylvia began to question the myths. In 2008 she traveled to the West Bank and Israel to learn about the situation first hand, which led her into political activism fighting Israeli human rights abuses and institutionalized racism against Palestinians.
